Shopify vs Amazon US Launch: Which Channel to Start With
The Shopify vs Amazon US launch decision depends on one thing: how much US awareness your brand already has. If US shoppers don't know you yet, Amazon is usually the faster, cleaner demand test. If you already see measurable US traffic and community pull, launch on your own Shopify site.
The reason is simple. Amazon brings shoppers who are already searching, and Shopify only converts the shoppers you bring. This is the sixth item on the Strategy & Channel list in our EU to US Expansion Checklist.
Should a brand launch on Shopify or Amazon first in the US?
It depends on existing US awareness. Our EU to US Expansion Guide gives the same rule: with meaningful US traffic and community pull, launch on your own site, and with no measurable US awareness, Amazon can be a faster, cleaner first demand test.
The table turns that rule into a starting point for your Shopify vs Amazon US launch. Treat it as a default to check against your own data.
| Your US awareness today | Usual first channel | Why |
|---|---|---|
| None measurable | Amazon | Shoppers arrive searching, so you can test whether the product converts without building an audience first |
| Some traffic and inquiries, little community | Either, with a capped test | Start where your strongest signals are, and keep the spend small |
| Meaningful US traffic and community pull | Shopify | You already have people to convert, and you keep the customer relationship |
Check the first column with real numbers. Our post on US demand signals for EU brands covers the five checks, starting with your US share of site traffic.
Why is Amazon the faster demand test when you have no US awareness?
Amazon is where many US shoppers already go to look for products. A listing there meets shoppers who are searching, so you can see whether your product converts before you build a US audience.
You still pay to be found. Amazon Ads, reviews, and price all affect whether your listing shows up, so a listing alone does not guarantee traffic.
Setup is manageable for a European business. Amazon's Europe-to-US guide (opens in new tab) says you need a government ID, a bank account, a business registration, proof of a European or US address from the last 180 days, and tax information. Identity verification is usually required, and Amazon says a European business may not need a US entity to sell in the US, though forming one may help.
Costs are clear up front. The Professional plan is $39.99 a month plus referral fees (opens in new tab). Referral fees are 15% in many categories, lower in some, and tiered in others, such as clothing at 5%, 10%, or 17% by price. FBA fees come on top if you use Amazon fulfillment.
Brand Registry matters for an EU brand. Enrollment is free and needs a pending or registered trademark from a country with an Amazon store. Amazon says European brands can transfer their benefits to the US through a support case, so check this early. Our guide's checklist also covers the separate USPTO filing.
What does Amazon limit?
Control. On Amazon you rent the customer relationship, and the rules narrow what you can do with it. According to Jungle Scout's summary of Amazon's terms (opens in new tab), marketing emails of any kind are prohibited, and attempts to divert Amazon users to another website are not allowed. Check Amazon's current Seller Central policies for the exact text.
That shapes your Shopify vs Amazon US launch plan. Amazon customers will not become your email list, so each Shopify customer later is a separate acquisition cost. Amazon also needs a tax plan: storing inventory in an Amazon fulfillment center is the most common cause of sales tax nexus for international FBA sellers (opens in new tab).
Amazon sales still help a retail pitch. Sell-through data from Amazon is the kind of proof US buyers ask for, as covered in our post on DTC vs retail US expansion.
When does Shopify make sense as the first US channel?
When you already have people to convert. Shopify gives you the brand experience, the pricing control, and the customer data. It does not give you traffic, so it works best for brands with measurable US visitors, an email list, or a community that asks for the product.
The platform cost is low. Shopify's Basic plan (opens in new tab) is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly, with Shopify Payments at 2.9% plus 30 cents per standard online card transaction. Higher plans cut the card rate.
The real cost is acquisition. Without marketplace traffic, you pay to reach each US customer, at the 2-4x CAC range covered in our post on US CAC for European brands. You also own the rest of the job: shipping, duties, returns, and tax collection.
If you have the awareness, the trade is good. You pay more to reach customers who already know you, you convert at a higher rate than a stranger would, and you keep each customer's data to market to again.
How do you decide your Shopify vs Amazon US launch?
Work through five steps and write down the answer to each.
Step 1: Measure your existing US awareness
Pull your US traffic share, US search impressions, and unprompted US inquiries. These are the signals from our demand-signals post, and they place you in the table above.
Step 2: Match your awareness to a first channel
No measurable awareness points to Amazon. Meaningful traffic and community point to Shopify. A mixed picture points to whichever channel your strongest signal favors, with a smaller budget.
Step 3: Check your readiness for that channel
For Amazon, confirm your trademark status for Brand Registry, your identity and business documents, and your fulfillment route. For Shopify, confirm your US checkout, shipping rates, duty handling, and returns policy.
Step 4: Set a budget cap and pass mark
Decide the highest US CAC you can carry and the spend cap for the test. Run it for at least six months of structured testing, as our guide recommends, and judge it against your pass mark.
Step 5: Plan the second channel
Use the first channel's results to decide when to add the other. Keep one US pricing policy across both, since Amazon prices are visible to every shopper and to retail buyers.
Frequently asked questions
Should a brand launch on Shopify or Amazon first in the US?
For a Shopify vs Amazon US launch, match the channel to your existing US awareness. With no measurable awareness, launch on Amazon as a faster demand test. With meaningful US traffic and community pull, launch on Shopify. A mixed picture calls for a capped test on the channel where your strongest signals sit.
Can an EU brand sell on Amazon in the US without a US entity?
Amazon says a European business may not need a US entity to sell in the US, and forming one may help depending on the business. Taxes, fulfillment, and trademark status can change the answer, so get advice from a US accountant or counsel before you place inventory.
How much does it cost to start on Amazon versus Shopify?
Amazon's Professional plan is $39.99 a month plus referral fees, which are 15% in many categories, and FBA fees if you use it. Shopify's Basic plan is $29 to $39 a month plus payment processing. In a Shopify vs Amazon US launch, your larger cost on either channel is customer acquisition and fulfillment.
Will selling on Amazon hurt my Shopify store later?
It does not have to. Amazon customers can't be marketed to outside Amazon under its rules, so plan on acquiring Shopify customers separately. Keep pricing consistent across channels to avoid undercutting yourself.
